About BP Skarv Idun

The Skarv Idun is a large floating production storage and offloading unit and will be used by BP to exploit the oil and gas fields Skarv and Idun, located just below the Arctic circle in the northern Norwegian Sea.


We worked with our process package manufacturer customer to supply the valves for their water treatment package. The scope included manual and actuated ball valves (including Tungsten Carbide Coated (TCC) ball and seated ball valves), double block and bleed valves, gate, globe and check valves in duplex and super duplex up to 2500lb rating. Project non-destructive testing included ferrite scope analysis, DPI and PMI on duplex and super duplex materials. Testing was in compliance with NORSOK M-630 MDS specifications and conducted on materials from NORSOK M-650 Rev. 3 approved manufacturers.

Due to the project's build schedule, valves were required onsite, in the UK within 24 calendar weeks. In addition to this, valve bodies had to be manufactured from stamped forgings, close to final shape. In order to meet the customers lead-time, stamped forgings could not be manufactured in time, forged bar was also unacceptable. PJV worked with our manufacturer, customer, Aker Solutions and BP and proposed using forged bar which would be heat treated after machining as well as additional impact testing in the transversal and longitudinal position being performed. This proposal met both the needs of the project's delivery and quality requirements and was duly accepted by Aker Solutions and BP.


During this process we worked very closely with our customer to prioritise the production according to their fabrication schedule. We also worked very closely with our suppliers, including regular communications and face to face meetings between PJ Valves and the sub-suppliers.

The Skarv Idun project also provided production management challenges and a PJ Valve team member worked in our sub-suppliers factory to help support the production management process and ensure that we delivered against our customer commitments.

The project therefore demonstrates how we can use our expertise to provide alternatives to our customers which enable them to achieve their goals. The project also showcased how we manage busy sub suppliers against challenging  schedules and  project specifications.
